Government Polytechnic College, Nagercoil is one of the two polytechnics started in 1959 under the second Five Year Plan. It started functioning on the ST Hindu College Campus with 120 students. In September 1963, it was shifted to the present place which covers an area of 20 hectors. The Polytechnic is situated at 3 km from the Anna Bus Stand, Nagercoil, on the Rajakkamangalam Road and has ample bus facilities. It has been growing up robustly ever since its bloom and is about to celebrate its Golden Jubilee shortly. The number of students amounted to 180 during the academic year 1966-77 and girl students shared the lot from the academic year 1976-77 onwards. Part-time diploma courses are being offered since 1978-79. The strength of students which was 200 during the academic years 2001-2002.and 2002-2003 has progressed to 240 from the academic year 2003-2004 onwards. After the inclusion of computer engineering department the students strength further increased to 300 from 2008-2009 onwards. Class shift system (Shift I & Shift II) introduced from 2009-2010 onwards and total intake raised to 540.
